It’s been a cool month in more ways than one for soft drinks company Britvic.
The company reported a fall of 15 per cent in its Irish revenues for the third quarter after the coldest June in several years. It also saw its first quarterly volume decline in the UK market – again due to the bad weather.
Weathering the storm
According to Britvic, the total soft drinks market volume was down 8.2 per cent in the UK during the last four weeks of the quarter; while it fell by 13.2 per cent in Ireland.
There are no signs of instant improvement either, with Britvic stating that it will remain cautious due to poor consumer sentiment in its largest markets and challenging trading conditions.
Paul Moody, the company’s chief executive, said that the soft drinks market was adversely affected not only by the bad weather but by the strength of the comparative period in 2010 – which benefited from good weather and additional sales due to the World Cup.
Britvic’s guidance on raw material inflation, meanwhile, remains unchanged at nine- to 11 per cent for the 2011 financial year.
