Shares in the US PC maker dropped by eight per cent earlier this week after it reported sales and earnings that fell short of market expectations.
Expanding business
Despite the negativity, Dell claims it has made progress in expanding the company away from being dependent on its traditional PC business. As such it believes it is in a strong position to withstand an economic downturn.
However, as the outlook weakens, Dell has reduced its forecast for sales in the current fiscal year to one-five per cent – down from the five-nine per cent range it had previously predicted.
According to Dell executives, the weaker revenues reflect a decision to cut back on sales with low profit margins, such as some consumer PCs, storage equipment and software. As such, a gross profit margin of 22.3 per cent for the quarter has been achieved.
