The bookmakers’ pre-tax profits were £71.8million – down from £114.7million just one year before. Indeed its net revenue fell by three per cent to £483million, although this was partly affected by the comparison to a World Cup year.
However, what is particularly notable is that its profits in Ireland fell by nearly a third to £3.8million – even though the amount staked in bets actually grew by seven per cent.

By contrast, its figures in its UK retail business dropped by two per cent – to £75.4million; but its online betting and other digital profits actually leapt by 6.5 per cent to £31million.
According to chief executive Richard Glynn there are good levels of underlying growth in the UK retail and digital business even though economic conditions are tough. He is particularly encouraged by the performance of the company’s gaming machines.
