Mobile phones are far from a niche product – in fact, it appears almost everyone has one. However, if the latest figures are to be believed then it seems most of us have a new one too.
That’s because a Strategy Analytics report shows that mobile phone makers shipped 361million handsets during the second quarter of the year – that’s up 13 per cent compared to the same period in 2010.
Apple takes a chunk
The report shows that smartphone volumes have reached 110million units, with Apple surpassing Nokia and Samsung as the biggest smartphone vendor.
Nokia actually remained the biggest maker of all types of handsets but saw its market share dip to 25 per cent – its lowest level since 1999 as volumes fell 20 per cent to 88.5million for the quarter. Samsung meanwhile, shipped 74million units, rising 16 per cent from 63.8million in the quarter during the prior year.
Apple meanwhile more than doubled its handset shipments to a record 20.3million units – it now has a market share of six per cent, just one point behind LG, the number three manufacturer which shipped 24.8million handsets during the three months with volumes down 19 per cent.
