HMV Struggles - but savings are available

It’s been a damp summer for high street music retailer HMV, as it reports that its sales continued to fall over the last three months.

Like-for-like retail sales have fallen 15.1 per cent with total sales, including the impact of 29 store closures, indicating an overall fall of 21.8 per cent.

Battling competition

One of the problems for HMV is that it has faced stiff competition from supermarkets and online downloads, which have eaten into the sales of CDs and DVDs.

As a consequence, HMV has attempted to reorganise its business with trials of a new store format; while in June it agreed a £220million refinancing deal with its banks while selling the Waterstone’s book chain and its Canadian arm.

Now it hopes to refocus by offering more technology products including MP3 players, tablet computers and headphones, as well as offering live music and event ticketing.

Deals to seize

While it may be unfortunate to hear of the fall of another major retailer, Irish consumers will be thrilled with the offers available as HMV bids to attract more business.

The company has issued a host of voucher codes via 5hop5.ie, which offer substantial savings on everything from CDs to DVDs. Here we take a look at some of the leading HMV voucher codes that will be expiring soon:

-      Jay Z: Kanye West – Watch the Throne for £8.99 (offer ends September 15).

-      Sucker Punch for £9.97 (offer ends September 15).

-      Harry Potter Years 1-7 Boxset for £24.93 (offer ends September 25).

-      Kings Speech for £9.99 (offer ends September 19).
