These
are rough times for mobile phone giant Nokia, which has been forced to cut
3,500 jobs at a plant in Romania
as part of a restructuring plan – however, for mobile phone consumers in
general there’s arguably never been a better time to shop.
Painful
steps
Nokia
has announced the job cuts as being in addition to thousands of job losses already
declared as part of its 1billion euro cost-cutting programme. It will shut its
plant in Cluj , Romania , in what chief executive
Stephen Elop described as “painful, yet necessary, steps.”
It
appears that Nokia is acting quickly by scaling back its manufacturing presence
in an effort to secure its long-term survival. Now it is expected to focus on
feature phone manufacturing on locations with optimal proximity to suppliers
and key markets – prompting many to expect it will make the switch to Asia .
Increased
competition
One
of the reasons Nokia is struggling is because it has lost ground to competitors
including Apple’s iPhone and phones that use the Google Android operating
system. However, while the increased competition may be bad news for Nokia, it’s
good news for consumers with manufacturers and networks jostling for position
and releasing a host of mobile phone
voucher codes with key savings.
