MATTEL NOT PLAYING WHEN IT COMES TO PROFITS

Thanks in part to the huge success of Disney’s Pixar movies, such as Cars 2, Mattel has seen its profits rise 15 per cent in its third quarter – to a staggering £191million.

Worldwide sales increased by nine per cent, with most of the growth coming from the firm’s international markets.

Driving success

According to chairman and chief executive Robert A Eckert, Cars 2 fuelled momentum for the company with a six per cent rise in sales of the firm’s Hot Wheels range. Mattel has released tie-in models and play sets featuring characters from the animated film.

An old favourite has also had a key role to play with demand for Barbie dolls enjoying a spike of 17 per cent year-on-year. Both Barbie and Ken dolls were also featured in Hollywood – as part of Pixar’s previous film, Toy Story 3.

In addition, Mattel enjoyed a nice boost courtesy of favourable exchange rates as weakness in the US dollar helped lifts it bottom line once foreign earnings were converted. However, this was partially offset by higher production costs.

Toy savings

Whisper it quietly, but Christmas is not too far away – we’re little over two months away from the big day. So if you haven’t already started shopping, it’s well worth planning ahead – particularly for the most expensive members of the family, the kids.

To help bring down the cost of the big day, 5hop5.ie has an entire section devoted to baby, kids and toy voucher codes and offers. Among those currently available are:

-      10 per cent off toys at The Hut (voucher code expires October 31).

10 per cent discount on a range of model planes at Home & Garden Gifts (voucher code expires October 31).
