PETROL USE FALLS – BUT ARE YOU DRIVING AWAY WITH OTHER SAVINGS?

Since the onset of the credit crunch and the recession, motorists have been keen to reduce their petrol consumption – and according to new figures from the AA, our use of the pump has been cut by 15 per cent.

It finds that petrol sales for the first six months of 2011 were 1.7billion litres less than during the same period three years ago.

Record fuel prices

According to the AA, the drop in petrol sales can be directly linked to record fuel prices with many drivers struggling to make ends meet and businesses also cutting back.

Comparing the first six months of the year to pre-recession levels, the cut in fuel purchases was the equivalent of 40,000 delivery rounds by full petrol tankers. Indeed many petrol stations have gone out of business with supermarkets offering lower prices in a bid to attract more consumers.
